H.E. Kari Kahiluoto


Ambassador Kahiluoto holds a master’s degree in social studies (History) from the University of Helsinki. He served as First Lieutenant in the Finnish army reserve. He is member of the Sauna Society of Finland and Paasikivi Society Mr. Kahiluoto was born 1957 in Helsinki, Finland. He is married and has two adult sons.

– 2014 – 2017: Head of Secretariat for Nordic Co-Operation in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland (PYS) and representative of Finland in the Nordic Co-operation Committee (NSK).

– 2013 – 2014: Ambassador Designate to Syria (Damascus) and Ambassador to Lebanon (Beirut), Jordan (Amman) and Iraq (Bagdad) from 2013 to 2014, based in Beirut.

– 2009 – 2012: Deputy Head of Task Force established in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland for the campaign to win a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the term of 2013-2014.

– 2008 – 2009: Ambassador for Human Rights and Democracy posted at the Ministry in Helsinki.

– 2005 – 2008: Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament (CD) based in Geneva Switzerland, President of the Conference for the Finnish rotating Presidency in June 2012.

– 2000 – 2005: Deputy Head of Mission of the Mission of Finland to NATO in Brussels.

– 1996 – 2000: Director for Arms Control, Non-proliferation and Disarmament in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, responsible for EU coordination on arms-control, non-proliferation and disarmament issues for two Finnish EU-Presidencies, in 1999 in Helsinki and in 2006 in Geneva and at the UN in New York.

– 1990 – 1996: Served in various positions in the field of multilateral arms-control, disarmament and non-proliferation issues, including a period as Senior Adviser at the Nuclear Energy Division of the Finnish Ministry for Trade and Industry in 1995-1996.

– 1990 – 1991: Had one academic year of post-graduate studies in the international security studies program of the Geneva Graduate Institute for International Studies (IUHEI – GCSP).

– 1987 – 1990: Posted to the Finnish Embassy in Beijing, China.
